As if it were not painful enough being an early adopter, I now learn that my HDTV may be made obsolete by those mental giants in Hollywood and the entertainment industry who are releasing HDTV version of major motion picures on...VHS tape. That's right. Just when you got used to the ease of random access via the DVD, this is proposed. Brilliant. I was just getting comofortable with the idea of broadband - real broadband (5-100 Mbps) as propsed in D.C. by Craig Barrett and other Si Valley big-wigs being pushed as a national initiative. What gave me comfort was Mr. Barrett's assertion that "detailed technical discussions" about standards for digital rights managemant would solve the problem and the promise of broadband would be fullfilled. go figure. If you're like me, you were surprised to learn that 75-80% of all U.S. households have access to cable modems or DSL as less than 10% subscribe (if you are really like me you have had a cable modem since 1996). You know what those folks do the most with their cable/dsl broadband connection?....email!
