Well, the end of another fantasy league baseball draft...this year went rather well: no drunk owners to trip over, no fights...and no controversy. One owner phoned in, and that was difficult, but otherwise it went well. Kelley's Heroes picked up Mike Piazza and some others and ended up with only $4 on the table. Not bad. After one week I'm in 5th.

In the "better late than never" dept., here's a short report on CTIA Wireless 2003, which was held, once again, in New Orleans. As Rick Burke once said "this is not a good town for early morning meetings". He uttered those immortal words as he opened a panel he was chairing...at 9:30 am....but back to Vivato. Are they kidding? In the "I installed a linksys AP and now I'm a bona fide RF engineer" dept., the excitable Wi-Fi crowd has discovered smart antennas...whooppee! Two words: have fun. Great slide-ware, but presents many problems in practice. For example, are you going to blow away your competitors with more signal, or, are they going to blow away you? either way there's trouble (I know, I still believe in the myth of interference..if only I were less gullible...and experienced) when two groups try to use the same radio frequency without control.

How about if these "free spectrum" folks have a meeting with spammers of America to get educated on the real "tragedy of the commons": here's a clue - re-read "Lord of the Flies" to understand why free spectrum and wide area WiFi will never work. Free spectrum is not the solution to providing multiple, fair, high quality PERVASIVE BROADBAND. Like the drunken crowd standing on Bourbon Street looking up for a glimpse of flesh, some cling to the belief that it's just a matter of time.

One fun Wi-Fi meets Ev-DO Lucent demo used licensed spectrum from Verizon using 1XEV-DO for backhaul and a bus with a mobile WiFi terminal bank inside. Instant WiFi. Good for consumers, quick to construct, no interference issues. That's me on the right, waiting to board the magical mystery bus behind us. It was a great demo. Not sure about the application though
I'm driving back from Henderson now. I'm thinking of putting the webcam in the car and testing my Verizon 1XRTT data card for uploads. Keep your eye on the laptop webcam at the left for the next 4 hours and you may get a view of the dessert..which today is really beautiful.
