Long time no blog....

I'm sitting in the departure area of San Diego's Lindbergh Field. Yea - everybody's still in shock down here. Friends lost their homes - several of them. The neighborhood hit the hardest was Scripps Ranch: a family community about 25 minutes from here. Everybody I know there has children; plural. I know it's not easy for anybody, but to have to live out of a trailer with little ones who barely had time to grab bunny and blanky is truly heartbreaking.

I'm using my Verizon EVDO modem here in the lounge and getting 350+ Kbps from a wide area network. Two people have just come up to me asking me "where the local access point is"...Sorry...there isn't one unless you go to the American Airlines lounge. They were blown away by this performance.

From the "hard to type a text message with mittens" dept....a new twist on the life-saving benefit of wireless: this time a text message was sent to a friend rather than calls to 911. Good friend too - he managed to get them out in a day. The article does say it took many messages to find them. If only they had gpsOne it could have been done in one call. The article from the Hearald Sun below does not explain what network they connected too, but we know that with GSM timing advance limiations they had to be whithin 35 km of the base station.

Push to talk, as reviewed by the mainstream press, is a re-run of the trade press over the past year. This week's BusinessWeek is no exception, with an article on PTT by BW's answer to Walt Mossberg, Stephen Wildstrom (with a new photo/look this week...more serious looking) who reliably writes re-hash articles that rarely add any new info - not that they apparently are supposed to - to three month old tech topics. Guess what? Verizon's version is not as good as Nextel's at this stage. woa.

Well, fun to get together with old friends (see photo above), even when it's incredibly brief!
